Mexican parasites, parvovirus, dying cats

Hello,

A sunny Hola to you...
I am flying back today after a wonderful 2 week vacation in
a small Mexican town with no real Internet access- it was
great to unplug, connect with my family, and help the
local veterinarian spay, neuter, do an emergency blood
transfusion, and fix another veterinarians botched dog
spay.
It was a real eye opener for me- I really do appreciate
the advanced quality of care that you and I can give to
our dogs and cats.
But even more important, I am so grateful just how valued
dogs and cats are in our society.
In Yelapa, there are hundreds of cats and dogs everywhere-
The Yelapanese really do like dogs ( or gatto and gatta en
espanol)
But most residents of Yelapa don't have alot of mon**ey to
spend on their pets- it's all basic care if any.
As well the high value that we place on pets as part of
our family does not exist there- the local veterinarian
can't make a living being a Vet..she charged $15 for a dog
spay, which is less than the cost of a meal in Yelapa.
Cats are even lower on the totem pole- they seldom get spayed or
neutered- and the ones that are getting "fixed" are being
done for Fr**ee. The local veterinarian Pamela is a big
Spay and Neuter advocate, and donates 1 day a month of her time
to try and reduce the cat population.
But as she said to me, it's so much better than having the cats
drowned or poisoned- which still happens.
I was really happy to be able to assist her with surgery, to
spay a pile of cats during a fr**ee spay and neuter day - I am
hoping that it will make somewhat of a difference.
We helped save a dog's life with a Blood Transfusion- but the catch
is we didn't have the usual anti-clotting liquid that I usually use..
but it worked and the dog did great!
I saw many cases of Parvovirus- unfortunately most puppies have
no vaccines, and on my second day there one died in my arms of Parvo.
It was a great trip for me and my family, and has given me a new
( and appreciative) perspective.
I am feeling grateful for where I live- and that I have people like
you, who really value their dogs and cats.

P.S. I am donating 25% of ALL PROCEEDS for the next 30 days
to the Yelapa Spay and Neuter Fund. You name it- on
whatever you get!
