Mexican parasites, parvovirus, dying cats

Hello,

Re: Mexican parasites, parvovirus, dying cats

A sunny Hola to you...

I am flying back today after a wonderful 2 week vacation in
a small Mexican town with no real Internet access- it was
great to unplug, connect with my family, and help the
local veterinarian spay, neuter, do an emergency blood
transfusion, and fix another veterinarians botched dog
spay.

It was a real eye opener for me- I really do appreciate
the advanced quality of care that you and I can give to
our dogs and cats.

But even more important, I am so grateful just how valued
dogs and cats are in our society.

In Yelapa, there are hundreds of cats and dogs everywhere-
The Yelapanese really do like dogs ( or gatto and gatta en
espanol)

But most residents of Yelapa don't have alot of mon**ey to
spend on their pets- it's all basic care if any.

As well the high value that we place on pets as part of
our family does not exist there- the local veterinarian
can't make a living being a Vet..she charged $15 for a dog
spay, which is less than the cost of a meal in Yelapa.

Cats are even lower on the totem pole- they seldom get spayed or
neutered- and the ones that are getting "fixed" are being
done for Fr**ee. The local veterinarian Pamela is a big
Spay and Neuter advocate, and donates 1 day a month of her time
to try and reduce the cat population.

But as she said to me, it's so much better than having the cats
drowned or poisoned- which still happens.

I was really happy to be able to assist her with surgery, to
spay a pile of cats during a fr**ee spay and neuter day - I am
hoping that it will make somewhat of a difference.

We helped save a dog's life with a Blood Transfusion- but the catch
is we didn't have the usual anti-clotting liquid that I usually use..
but it worked and the dog did great!

I saw many cases of Parvovirus- unfortunately most puppies have
no vaccines, and on my second day there one died in my arms of Parvo.

It was a great trip for me and my family, and has given me a new
( and appreciative) perspective.

I am feeling grateful for where I live- and that I have people like
you, who really value their dogs and cats.

P.S. I am donating 25% of ALL PROCEEDS for the next 30 days
to the Yelapa Spay and Neuter Fund. You name it- on
whatever you get!

Diet For A New America Video by John Robbins

In Diet for a New America (1991), John Robbins, son of the founder of the Baskin-Robbins ice-cream empire, presents his theories about how an animal-based diet is killing Americans. Abandoning the wealthy lifestyle of his family, Robbins lived in a log cabin while subsisting on a simple diet of grains, and he eventually realized his calling as a dietary evangelist. He is not without a sense of humor; at one point he describes how he broke with his family by "walking away from our ice-cream-cone-shaped swimming pool." But Robbins takes his mission seriously, buttressing his strong opinions about how America must reform its diet with commentary from physicians and academics, including some experts from Cornell University who appear on camera. Robbins himself visits farms where pigs, cattle, and chicken are raised in hellish conditions to make the point that modern meat production is inhumane. Much of this video comes across as being commonsense dietary advice, though some of the more extreme statements by experts are no doubt debatable. And there's no denying that footage of heart surgeries and animals cramped into filthy cages could serve as strong reinforcement to those seeking a healthier diet.

EARTHLINGS documentary

EARTHLINGS is a feature length documentary about humanity's absolute dependence on animals (for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research) but also illustrates our complete disrespect for these so-called "non-human providers." The film is narrated by Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix (GLADIATOR) and features music by the critically acclaimed platinum artist Moby.

Sentenced to Earth Video

Below is a three-part documentary called 'Sentenced to Earth' from the early 1990's.  I don't agree with everything Dr. Marvin Goodkind states but the overarching concept is good.  He also proposes a few philosophical points which might get you thinking.

The video itself is pretty dorky at parts but does have some difficult imagery so please watch at your own risk.
